First Female Bishop selects YMCA for inaugural visit

YMCA Crewe were delighted to play a small part in history earlier this week as they welcomed the first woman Bishop in the Church of England.  The appointment was announced at 10:00am on 17 December and the visit to YMCA Crewe was Libby Lane’s first public appointment after the news broke.

The new Bishop laid a brick as part of a Hard as Nailz session which enable residents to learn and develop DIY skills. The YMCA hosted several different TV stations, together with an entourage of camera crews, journalists and clergy.

The Bishop chatted with staff who showed her round the facilities and a large numbers of residents shared their stories and asked her questions about her new role.  The whole afternoon was very special and the Bishop showed a genuine and informed understanding of the needs of young people and families.

Libby will be consecrated in York at the end of January and will serve as Bishop of Stockport.
