Volunteering was a great start for Marie’s retail career

Marie is the Assistant Manager of our shop in Welwyn Garden City. She is a former YMCA resident and wanted to give something back to the organisation by becoming a volunteer. She started volunteering at the shop five days a week.

By this time she had moved out of the YMCA hostel and was living on her own.

Marie volunteered for a year and a half and gained a range of experience. She enjoyed helping out with deliveries and driving the van and learnt how the shop is run.

She then saw a vacancy for Assistant Manager and decided to apply. The experience she’d gained as a volunteer obviously helped and she got the job!

She has been in the post since October 2010. Marie manages up to ten volunteers and the aspect of the job she enjoys most is talking to customers. She knows that it’s important to be friendly and approachable.

“Even if customers don’t buy anything, I hope they appreciate the friendly approach and will come back or recommend the shop to their friends.”

Marie obviously enjoys her job as she often finds herself in the shop on her days off: “I love the shop and I’m in as much as I can be.”
