Woking YMCA opened the Ypod (a million pound, state-of-the-art youth facility) in the heart of Woking town centre in June 2006. The Ypod has two floors, the first of which is now up and running, consisting of a youth café (with pool table, table football, video games and internet suite), a recording studio, a large rehearsal room, a performance hall (with stage and PA system) that can hold up to 250 people, office space, meeting rooms and full disabled access. This also serves as an excellent conferencing and room hire facility. The second floor is aiming to be a multi-sports centre with five-a-side football pitch and other facilities. At present we have a team of three employed staff members and around forty volunteers. Terry Eckersley, Chief Executive of the YMCA in Woking, has taken the lead in developing the scheme. He has 15 years experience at the YMCA and also is a published singer songwriter and a published author on youth services. He said, "We want to meet needs in terms of youth work. The centre will be a key resource and provide facilities for young people in Woking. We have got to know all agencies and youth workers in Woking and networking with all aspects of the community and the aim is to work with them in the strategic development of the centre and indeed Woking." We can offer young people advice, information and guidance on all aspects of life, a safe, positive place to hang out with their friends, accredited training and development opportunities, space to practice and perform music, dance, drama, DJing and more, and aiming to offer Housing, sport and fitness facilities and health and fitness programmes all based from Woking YMCA.
