YMCA responds to the Children and Social Work bill announced in today’s Queen’s Speech (18 May 2016)
Denise Hatton, Chief Executive of YMCA England, said: “The introduction of the Children and Social Work Bill is a welcome improvement to the support the Government provides for children in care.
“YMCA supports thousands of young people each year who have spent time in the care system with a safe place to stay and the guidance of caring, responsible adults. Many of these young people will have been through challenging circumstances and require additional help in order for them to progress. Often, the simplest steps when transitioning into adulthood can be the toughest for those who have experienced the care system and YMCA sees first-hand the difference that gaining employment or moving into a stable home can have on a young person’s life.
“Setting out the rights of children in care and extending the age of support up to 25-years-old are positive steps towards ensuring those in the care system are given the best chances to succeed.
“YMCA understands that in order for young people to develop fully they must be holistically supported. Alongside employment support, helping care leavers through school and college and providing them with the stability and security of a home, YMCA also focuses on building the resilience, emotional intelligence and mental health of the young people we support.
“This bill should enable us to help more young people, in greater depth, for longer.”
