YMCA Crewe offer healthy brunch clubs for children during holidays

YMCA Crewe is giving children a healthy start to their day by running a daily brunch club during the summer holidays.

It is hoped that the youngsters will receive breakfasts containing three of their five a day recommended portions of fruit and vegetables. Over the coming weeks 120 primary school children will receive over 300 bowls of cereal and 6,000 slices of toast. There will be prizes awarded for those who choose the healthiest breakfast options.

The club will be run from church halls and children’s centres around the city and will be targeted towards children on free school meals. Participating children will also be invited to attend after school clubs in the area where they will be offered one evening meal a week, homework support, quizzes and games and a link worker.

Richard Holmes, Development Officer at YMCA Crewe said: “We try to get involved in children’s lives as early as possible. Those from disadvantaged backgrounds often don’t get enough food during the holiday period so this was a fun way to provide for them”.
