YMCA welcomes new research published today by Crisis – ‘Home – No less will do’ – calling for improved access to private renting for single homeless people.
Responding to the release of the report, Denise Hatton, Chief Executive of YMCA England said:
“For young people facing time living on the street or moving from sofa to sofa, a place in supported accommodation is a valuable lifeline and chance to get themselves back on track, however for many, this can end in frustration.
“The findings set out today by Crisis are supported by research YMCA has previously undertaken, more than half of our residents feel ready to move on but are currently unable to do so due to the lack of options available to them.
“Being unable to move on from supported accommodation not only significantly delays an individual’s move to independence, with resulting costs for the Government and the public, it also means longer waiting lists and delays for newly homeless people in desperate need of roof over their head.
Without the offer of greater help to rent in the private sector, thousands in supported accommodation are going to continue to face a cliff edge and find their transition to independence and away from homelessness delayed until further notice.”
